One More Thing...

If you've been grocery shopping at Standa and you get out front with your three, very heavy, bags and suddenly realize that you bought too much to carry (well, it didn't look like that much when it was in the cart!) and you're trying to figure out how to get it all home and you know that you won't be able to hail a taxi because, well, it's just not done like that in Florence (you have to call for one) and you have no idea what you're going to do, just hope that you're fortunate enough to have two of your students come along who, upon seeing your predicament, offer to carry your groceries home for you. Grazie mille, John and Maria Christina! You two were real life savers last night!

Carolyn,
Yes, no car in the parking lot when you are leaving Standa creates a problem. My suggestion: a backpack. I would put the heavy items into the backpack and still have two free hands to carry the rest. Since there is a disincentive to "overbuy", no bilological experiments in your "refrigerator". Europeans are fascinated by the size of our refrigerators and it is a status symbol to have such a giant in their small apartments.
But then, Carolyn, it is such a pleasure to say "Again, I need to cross the Ponto Veeeeeccio to pick up some breaaaaaad that I forgot to buy. What a chore!" Wish I could say that this morning!(I lived right around the corner).
Our students pick up the elegant manners of helping out very fast. It is fascinating to see them change, mature and grow before your eyes. They are becoming people of the world.
Keep up the good job,
Maria
