Domenica

In 1847, shortly after arriving in Florence, Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote in a letter to a friend, “Florence is beautiful, as I have said before and must say again, most beautiful.”

And at no time is she more beautiful than on a domenica mattina (“Sunday morning”). The bells of Florence seem to ring more often, more loudly, and more joyously on Sunday, which isn’t surprising given the predominance of the Catholic faith. Everywhere, people are out for fare una passaggiata (literally “to do a walk”), and the sound of music fills the air. This is a day to celebrate life.

This is also the day that the students arrive. I can’t think of a better day to experience Florence for the first time.
