Cultural Calendar: Part 2


The day the students have been waiting for has arrived! The Cultural Calendar for the second half of the program was posted this week, and signups began Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Once again the AIFS staff has planned some incredible classes, workshops, day trips, and weekend excursions. By noon on Wednesday, a line stretched all the way from the office through the study and reception area, eager students hoping to get spots in these activities. I was actually moved by their enthusiasm, which hasn’t waned in the least, even after five weeks. This is one fantastic group!

Now, here’s what they have to look forward to:

Monday, March 26: Wine Tasting: Special Wines (repeated Wednesday, March 28, and Thursday, March 29)
--Todd will be introducing you to premiums wines of superior quality. Get some good ideas if you are thinking of taking wine back home for gifts. (7 euros)

Monday, March 26: Cooking Class Menu C (repeated Wednesday, March 28)
--Third menu in the series. This time you will be making stuffed peppers and zucchini, lasagna, and Italian apple cake. (15 euro)

Thursday, March 29: Italian Film Night
--After a busy week, relax and enjoy a lovely piece of Italian film. (free)

Friday, March 30 through Sunday, April 1: Weekend Trip: Venice and Verona
--Departing Friday morning, this tour includes two night’s hotel accommodation, guided tours, and entrances (300 euros)

Monday, April 2: Walking Tour: The Untold Tales of Florence
--This is the alternative city walking tour based on local myths and legends and their imprint on the fabric of the city. Discover some of the city’s more hidden treasures. (2 euros)

Monday, April 2: Cooking Class Menu D (repeated Wednesday, April 4, Monday, April 16, and Wednesday April 18)
--Last menu in the cooking class series. Risotto alla Milanese, Polpettine alla Fiorentina, and Schiaccita Fiorentina. (15 euro)

Friday, April 6: Good Friday
--This is Easter Weekend, so look out for plenty going on across Italy. AIFS produces a handout nearer to the time letting you know what is happening in Florence.

Wednesday, April 11: Language Exchange
--Aperitivo with Italian students. (5 euro)

Wednesday, April 11: Group Meal: Il Latini
--Famous Florentine institution in all the guidebooks. No menus; they decide what you are eating (always involving meat). It will be a real feast of typically Italian dishes, a chance to try out all the courses. (25 euros, drink included)

Thursday, April 12: Italian Film Night
--Another chance to see a classic piece of cinema that may make you laugh, cry, or both (free)

Friday, April 13: Pisa nad Lucca Daytrip
--For those of you that don’t suffer from paraskavedekatraphobia, this is a great chance to discover Pisa and its famous leaning tower and then on to the walled city of Lucca. You really can’t miss these two fantastic Italian towns that are almost on your doorstep. (5 euros)

Saturday, April 14: Cinqueterre Daytrip
--Always a favorite, a great chance to spend a day by the sea, exploring the villages, taking in the sights, hiking, and maybe even some swimming. Best be prepared! The day will finish off with dinner (included in price) before a late evening arrival back in Florence. (20 euros)

Sunday, April 15: Soccer Match: Florentina v. Siena
--We are going to try again. At the time of writing the stadium is only open to Season Ticket Holders. We are going to try our very best to get hold of some tickets to allow as many NCSAC students as possible to come and watch La Viola! Keep an eye on the noticeboard at school to see if/when you can sign up. Fingers crossed!

Monday, April 16: Classical Concert at Orsanmichele
--A great chance to sample some moving music in the historic setting of the Orsanmichele Church. (7 euros)

Thursday, April 19-Sunday, April 22: Weekend Trip: Sorrento
--Leaving after class on Thursday, this is a great chance to see the South of Italy. Thanks to everyone who has signed up already. There is currently a waitlist and we are traying to take as many of you as possible! (325 euros)

Monday, April 23: Language Exchange
--Aperitivo with Italians. (5 euros)

Monday, April 23: Film Night
--Final chance to see some classic Italian/Italian-related film. The title will be announced nearer to the time! (free)

Friday, April 27: Horse Riding
--Craving some outdoor activities? Why not spend a couple of hours trekking in the hills around Florence! No experience required! Food included. (28 euros)

Friday, April 27: Cycling
--We’ve arranged for some small group rides in the countryside around Florence. Departing from the city centre, we’ll spend a few hours exploring with a local guide. Distance covered will be between 10-15 miles, so you need to be in good health! (18 euros)

Final Week: Leaving Show
--Last chance for everyone to get together and reflect on their time in Florence. This will also be an opportunity for the talented amongst you to entertain the rest of the group! If you are interested in performing, come and let us know before April 23. There is no open mic, so don’t miss your big chance and sign up!

Friday, May 4: Departure Day
--Nearer the time there will be detailed information in your mailboxes about flights home, shipping packages, good you can and can’t take back, traveling after the program, and checking out of your apartments.
